Many machine manufacturers may be inadvertently relying on out-of-date standards to demonstrate compliance with the Machinery Directive, warns Laidler Associates, one of the UK’s leading safety and compliance consultants. Only standards harmonised with the current Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, which came into force at the end of December 2009, can now be used to demonstrate compliance. Many companies, however, are continuing to reference superseded standards that were harmonised with the previous, and now obsolete, Machinery Directive.
Recycling & Waste Management
A Leicestershire-based demolition contractor has diversified into the recycled aggregates business following a large investment in crushing and screening equipment from Sandvik Mining and Construction. With its sights set on material quality over quantity, AR Aggregates (a newly-formed division of AR Demolition) has also become the UK’s first non-quarry operator of a four-way split Sandvik QA450.
Conveying
A Spiroflow flexible conveyor has been installed at Jacob’s Bakeries, Aintree, Liverpool factory. It feeds bags of brown flour directly into the mixer used to manufacture the base of Jacob’s famous Club biscuits, Gold biscuits and some of the biscuits for its packs of Biscuits for Cheese.
IBCs & FIBCs
Behind the scenes of the food processing and manufacturing industry lay some less high profile names whose input is critical to many of the food manufacturers. Third party logistics company Atchison Topeka (AT) is a major player in the business of food ingredient transportation and warehousing. AT turned to bulk solids handling specialists Flexicon (Europe) to commission a system to move substantial volumes of powder materials from bulk bags into bulk road tankers with speed and efficiency and in a food safe manner.
